Barnehurst Column - Your Views

Dear Sir ,

Parts of Barnehurst Road have not been re surfaced for about 30 years but it does not stop people using it as a race track. Despite a national television campaign explaining why we have a 30 mph limit Bexley Council refuse to act both in terms of the road and road safety. Would you not agree that they should listen?

Yours faithfully
John Elkington

Dear Editor,

T
he British Legion Hall which was destroyed by fire has now been demolished. Speaking to a member of the British Legion he told me that the hall was built over a World War 2 shelter which could accomodate over 200 people and is now visible. Would it be a good idea if the council could be persuaded to preserve these shelters as it is part of our heritage. I am sure it would be of great public interest if organised tours could be made to view these if they were fully preserved. Perhaps a campaign could be arranged?

David Webb.

Barnehurst Library - by a Barnehurst resident

Library
Barnehurst Library
Hanging over us like the sword of Damicles is the imminent closure of Barnehurst Library.

This rotten council refused to listen to our pleas and decided to close it with a majority of three. The YES councillors obeyed the whip and voted for the closure.
I exchanged many emails with the leader of the council - Ball. It was evident however that there was no way he would listen to any reasons for keeping open the library.

Their only interest is statistics - How many people come through the door. The way they achieve this is to open large libraries in town centres and give free internet usage and issue DVD's and videos. Branch libraries no longer play a part, even though Barnehurst library is well used.

To use other libraries is now over a mile away for Barnehurst residents. Many will have to drive, causing even more congestion. Barnehurst library is the hub of Barnehurst. I am convinced they wish Barnehurst to be swallowed up and just be part of Bexleyheath.

Ball tried to tell me how wonderful Mobile Libraries are. How can you compare our lovely building with a van? By profession I am a Homebound Librarian and was extremely insulted by his remarks. I know the importance of a local library. Libraries can serve many functions apart from issuing books and videos. For example local libraries can offer support groups to the local residents and used properly could become a vital part of our community.

The important thing now is to ensure the building is not vandalised after closure and so hopefully can be reopened when this rotten bunch are kicked out. My guess is the council will do little to stop vandalism, giving them a good reason to demolish the building and erect even more housing.
Incidentally Ball lives at Northumberland Heath - Home of the new mega library.

How many people were familiar with the British Legion Hall, off Inglewood Road, Barnehurst?

Tucked up a service road backing on to Martens Grove it was a charming building run by lovely people. As a member of a folk music group we used this venue on a Wednesday evening. The members enjoyed our music and came along to listen and supply us with tea and biscuits free of charge.

Although affiliated to the British Legion they received little from them in the way of finance. The members built the building in the sixties and it meant everything to them. These people have done such a lot for this country. How have they been rewarded? For years the building has been plagued by vandalism. Graffiti adorned the building. Windows were smashed. When boarded up, the boards were smothered the next day. On Monday the final act was commited. It is now destroyed by fire. Although not proven arson would appear to be the cause.

I had the sad news of telling one of the members and took him to see the damage. He is a modest man. When pressed he will tell you of great heroic deeds he was involved in in World War 2. He has seen many hard times. Even so the sight of the building bought him to tears. If any of the culprits read this. Think on. Anon.
