Photos: Martens Grove

Martens Grove ia an ancient woodland between Barnehurst and Crayford. Martens Grove had a huge house built here in the 1850s. Birch trees, firs and other tree species flourish here. Pathways make this ideal for dog walking. The old open air swimming pool was here. Now there is a basketball/sports court. A wall still remains from either the old lido or house. Mature woodlands are vital for the local environment. The lido originally opened in 1933. There are woodlands behind the swing park and near Oakwood Drive. Biodiversity is helped by trees - a native oak, for example, can be home to 423 different leaf-eating insects.
